Onion and Tomato chutney/ Kara chutney
Onion Tomato chutney is also known as kara chutney in Tamil is a very popular and a famous chutney in Tamil Nadu. No south Indian breakfast like idli, dosa and pongal is complete without this delicious chutney.
Ingredients:
* Oil. 3tbsp
* Urad dal. 3 tsp
* Shallots. 1 handful
* Tomato. 3
* Dry red chili. 5
* Small ball tamarind
* Cloves garlic. 3
* Coriander leaves. 1 strand
To Temper:
* Oil. 1 tsp
* Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp
* Dry red chili. 2
* Curry leaves. 1 strand
Preparations:
Step 1:
Heat oil in a kadai and once the oil is hot and urad dal / ulunthu and saute until it turns golden. Then add dry red chillies , shallots onion, salt and saute it until the shallots turns translucent . Once the shallots onion turns translucent add a small piece of tamarind and also add garlic.
Step 2:
Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes soften and the raw smell is gone. Once done add some coriander leaves and turn off the heat. Let it cool completely.

No chutney is completely without tempering so to temper heat a tsp oil and add mustard seeds, once the seeds pops out add dry red chillies and curry leaves. Mix once and turn off the heat. Add the tempering on to the chutney and mix.
